Medium vs. Substack: One Man’s Opinion
So, you wonder, which is better for blogging, Medium or Substack?
I’ve tried both and found each to have its benefits.
Before we continue, please note this is an opinion piece, and I admit it’s quite likely some of my point will be uninformed as to just how each platform works. You can feel free to correct me in the comments. I’m not particularly great at understanding how to make all the bells and whistles of various writing platforms work. But I’m going on a limb here to say that a lot of people of my generation (X) are of the same understanding and tech ability.
I came to these sites for ease of use. So, which to I prefer?
My short answer is this: If forced to live in a world where I could only have access to one or the other, I’d choose Substack. But I’m not in a world like that, so I’ll choose both.
It’s likely that they both have more similarities than differences. They’re not exactly the same, but I think the nerds in the development offices of each are likely mimicking each other in their attempts to outdo each other.
As I sit here and think, I can’t nail down why exactly I prefer Substack over Medium. But I think it’s because Substack built their site around the newsletter. I found the practice of inviting people to subscribe to my newsletter…
