J.J. — Thank you for this piece. I am new to the world of Medium, and have been looking for a strong explanation of what curation is. Most of what I’ve read previously took for granted that we all knew what it was, that it was important, and how it worked. You’ve made a world of difference for me.

The next area I don’t have a strong understanding of is what is meant by “self-publish.” Is this in reference to posting on one’s own website, or is it in reference to publishing on websites other than Medium? From time to time I notice an author will say something like, “This was first published on…” Is this what “self-published” means?

I’d be grateful for some info in this area, and even a link to an article about it, if you know of one.
